Summer 2017 Travels
Museum staff and members of The Contemporary’s Board of Trustees travel throughout the year to see contemporary art in action around the world! We have been particularly interested in the experience of art outdoors as we embark on the Master Plan to transform Laguna Gloria into a world-class destination for contemporary art, and as we continue to expand our Museum Without Walls program bringing art out into the city.
This June, a group from The Contemporary traveled to the Venice Biennale in Italy and Skulptur Projekte Münster in Germany.
Initiated by Klaus Bussmann and Kasper König in 1977 and held every ten years, Skulptur Projekte is one of the world’s most anticipated exhibitions of art in public spaces. The fifth edition of Skulptur Projekte was led by artistic director Kasper König, freelance curator Britta Peters, and Marianne Wagner, curator at the LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur in Münster.
This year, 35 international artists, artist duos, and collectives participated in the festival, running June 10 – October 1, 2017, with projects embedded in the architectural, historical, and social contexts of the city of Münster.

The Contemporary was also delighted to host Skulptur Projekte curator Britta Peters for a Visiting Lecture in Fall 2015 as the 2017 festival began to take shape. You can watch the full video on our Vimeo here.
