Learn metal casting—used by sculptors for 7,000 years—through this introduction to foundry and mold-making practices. Working from simple positives (the original form of the desired casting), students learn one- and two-part sand molds, principles of furnace design, safe casting procedures, and metal finishing techniques. Students create at least one completed cast sculpture in aluminum (included in course) or bronze (for a small additional cost).THE SUMMER SECTION OF THIS COURSE HAS BEEN REMOVED. We will be offering it again in Fall 2019.
All supplies provided! Please wear appropriate clothes for an art studio (dress for mess!). Close-toed shoes are required for wood, metal, stone, or other sculpture classes. Eye and ear protection is provided, but some students prefer to bring their own which you are welcome to do.
