Learn all about saggar firing as you take your ceramic projects into the realm of alternative firing. All levels of wheel throwing and handbuilding skills are welcome in this class from beginner to advanced. Demonstration and instruction on throwing and handbuilding bowls, jars and vases are the basis for the first half of the session. You will then be introduced to terra sigillata techniques and saggars learning how to decorate and fire bisqued pieces to 1400 degrees with salts, stains, oxides and combustible materials that will create magical organic surfaces showing the marks of flame, salts, and oxides.
Tuition includes guaranteed access to 3 Ceramics Open Studio sessions per registered class. Ceramics Open Studio is an opportunity to practice skills outside class. A sign up sheet will be available when class starts.
Given the complexities of firing, we cannot guarantee student work will be fired in the order in which it was received. Students will be emailed each time the kiln has been fired and unloaded. Because of limited space we can only hold onto finished pieces for three (3) weeks and will discard any unclaimed pieces after the posted date.
Students can also purchase clay at Armadillo Clay: 3307 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78702. M-F 9am-5pm, Saturdays 9am-12pm. All clay MUST BE HIGH FIRE (Cone 10). We will not fire other clays.
