Virtual Plein Air Painting

Adults

Plein air painting is the act of going outside the studio to find subject matter for paintings. This could mean sitting on a busy street corner, or in a field of sunflowers, or somewhere in between. For some artists, there is a desire to paint classic plein air scenes like cityscapes or landscapes, but it’s not always easy or practical to travel to various locations and paint them in person.

Enter virtual plein air painting: using tools like Google Street View, we will explore locations both near and far to discover inspiration for our paintings. Along the way we will discuss fundamentals like composition, editing, and color theory. This course is appropriate for higher end beginners who already have a handle on the basics of painting, all the way to more advanced painters who are looking to push their ideas further.

Bring whatever media that you’re most comfortable working with to class. Exercises will focus on creating compelling compositions from image references, sketching in black and white, refining our choices, and designing unique color palettes.
