LISTEN: THE ARTIST TALKS ABOUT CONNECTING PAINTING WITH BEING A DJ

Museum of Contemporary Art Denver · Working with Music - Eamon Ore-Giron

Transcript:

My name is Eamon Ore-Giron, and this exhibition is Competing with Lightning / Rivalizando con el relámpago.

Along with being a painter and an artist, I have also been a musician for a number of years. I go by DJ Lengua, which in a lot of ways, the DJ part of that title is a bit of a joke because I think of myself more as a “sonidero,” which in Spanish literally means somebody who makes sounds. I'm less interested in making people dance and more interested in making people think and make connections.

So, if you think about painting as a way to kind of dig through the past and kind of pull up different relationships, both formal and also cultural, that's kind of the same approach that I take with music. I like to think about music as a way to kind of dig through the past, especially looking through Latin American musical histories and the diversity of the region as a whole and how much, so much of it is similar, and then how much of it has…there's so much, individuality in styles.

And so, the root of my music interests is the idea of digging and almost like an archeological kind of approach towards music and also improvisation, allowing for mixtures of sounds and rhythms to create the possibility of something new.
