Join us for a special two-day workshop with ceramicist Marcela Calderón Bony, an activation of the exhibition Abraham Cruzvillegas: Hi, how are you, Gonzo?

Abraham Cruzvillegas embraces the concept of autoconstrucción—loosely defined as “self-constructing”—in a vibrant artistic practice imbued with a sense of constant becoming, a curiosity to learn and share information.

Mexico City-based ceramicist Marcela Calderón Bony brings traditional processes and techniques in burnished pottery to Austin from her hometown of Patamban, Michoacán in this two-day workshop. Inspired by bats as migrants (between Austin and Mexico City), agricultural conduits, and mythical creatures from pre-Hispanic lore, Calderón Bony will weave together traditional techniques with imagery and tales of the bat, or tadarida brasiliensis, an animal that bridges the two cities.

Day one of the workshop takes place within the exhibition at the Jones Center, as Calderón Bony teaches participants to knead dry earth with water to make clay, the foundational material of pottery.

Day two of the workshop consists of a full-day instructional course on traditional Mexican vessel making at The Art School at Laguna Gloria, including pitchers and bowls decorated with charanda paint and burnished in a pre-Hispanic technique.
 
Activation will be conducted in Spanish, English translation provided. Participants are invited to take home finished vessels at the end of the workshop. Facilitated by The Art School at Laguna Gloria’s Mike Corney.
