About Xasal Manām Collective
Presently, the University of Texas at Austin is holding over 2,400 Native American ancestors at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus. Several of the ancestors being held are Coahuiltecan, people Indigenous to Texas and Northern Mexico. Join contemporary Coahuiltecan artist-activist group Xasal Manām Collective as they share on the impact of this disruption through poetry, song, and storytelling.
For the first exhibition in the HOST gallery space, located inside the Jones Center, Mexico City-based artist duo Celeste have installed a large textile painting and designed a long, curved bench with the intention of creating an intimate environment, or container, in which performances and other community events can take place.
In response to Celeste’s installation Mario Villanueva, The Contemporary Austin’s Experience and Engagement Manager, created contener as a monthly performance series. In the spirit of gathering to support other artists, contener will feature different musicians every second Wednesday of the month while Celeste’s work is on view. These specially planned monthly events are set to take place inside the exhibition space, creating an intimate experience for participants.
While you’re here, explore the stunning exhibition Eamon Ore-Giron: Competing with Lightning / Rivalizando con el relámpago, also on view at the Jones Center. And be sure to head to the rooftop for an after-hours view of beautiful downtown Austin.
HOST is an exhibition space that amplifies The Contemporary Austin’s commitment to centering artists and welcoming publics. With each exhibition cycle, an artist will create a newly commissioned environment in the HOST gallery space at The Jones Center. Programming will accompany each work throughout the run of each exhibition, as the artists invite viewers into their worlds.
