ABOUT THE TEEN ARTIST + MENTOR EXHIBITION
Austin, Texas — The Contemporary Austin’s Teen Artist + Mentor Exhibition is the culmination of the museum’s 2014 Advanced Young Artists program, which pairs ten professional artist-mentors with ten exemplary high school art students. Dynamic new works by all twenty artists—from a topographical display reminiscent of contemporary gaming to a kinetic art experiment powered by bicycle, and much more—will fill the Pump Project Art Complex, a nonprofit art space in East Austin.
Meeting each week over a seven-month period, the teen and artist-mentor pairs have collaborated in the artists’ studios for hours of conversation and exploration. During this multigenerational creative experience, the mentors forge direct connections between the young artists and the Austin cultural community, sharing creative ideas and goals with the teens, acting as soundboards for innovative problem solving, and encouraging accountability to themselves and the community at large.
The Advanced Young Artists program at The Contemporary Austin began in 2010 as an extension of the museum’s Young Artists program. Both initiatives were founded out of a commitment to provide opportunities to students with limited access to arts resources. The museum supports both the students and the professional artists, providing all supplies for the students, as well as a small stipend for the working artists taking part in the program.
