Austin, Texas – The Contemporary Austin is pleased to announce a weekend of celebrations on Friday, May 2, through Sunday, May 4, 2014. The Contemporary will launch the weekend with the opening of its Spring/Summer exhibition A Secret Affair: Selections from the Fuhrman Family Collection at the Jones Center, with a Member and Special Guest Preview from 6-8PM on Friday. On Saturday evening, The Contemporary Austin is pleased to host its first annual Art Dinner honoring the new Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria, with an elegant dinner and the unveiling of Current, a site-specific installation by artist Orly Genger. On Sunday, May 4, both museum locations, the Jones Center and Laguna Gloria, will be open to the public with free admission in recognition of these landmark events.
A Secret Affair: Selections from the Fuhrman Family Collection, on view at the Jones Center and Laguna Gloria from May 3 to August 24, 2014, gathers important works from the collection of Glenn and Amanda Fuhrman that explore themes of the body, the figure, and relationships. Glenn Fuhrman is the Founder of The FLAG Art Foundation in New York and the Fuhrmans are avid and recognized collectors of contemporary art.
A Secret Affair is curated by Louis Grachos, Ernest and Sarah Butler Executive Director, with Danielle Nieciag, Manager Special Projects, Director’s Office. Works from the following artists will be showcased: Matthew Barney, Louise Bourgeois, Maurizio Cattelan, Katharina Fritsch, Robert Gober, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Subodh Gupta, David Hammons, Jim Hodges, Anish Kapoor, Jim Lambie, Ron Mueck, Juan Muñoz, Marc Quinn, Charles Ray, Thomas Schütte, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Kiki Smith, and Gillian Wearing.
The Art Dinner, a major new annual event for The Contemporary Austin, celebrates the commencement of the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria this spring. The dinner will honor the Edward and Betty Marcus Foundation for its founding grant, alongside the debut of a monumental new sculpture by New York–based artist Orly Genger. This special event will bring regional and national contemporary art figures, artists, and museum patrons to Austin to benefit the exhibitions and conservation of the works of art and park grounds. The Contemporary Austin reflects the spectrum of contemporary art through exhibitions, commissions, education, and the collection. The museum consists of two primary locations, the downtown Jones Center at 700 Congress Avenue, and Laguna Gloria, a twelve-acre site on Lake Austin at 3809 West 35th Street, which is home to the Driscoll Villa, the Art School, and the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park.
