Art History Roundtable: Experimental Arts of Black Mountain

Spend time connecting with art history and other people. In this class, we’ll immerse ourselves in art historical images and share our own artworks and stories as we build close-looking practices, interpretation, and community.

Black Mountain College (1933–1962) is a legendary avant-garde institution that revolutionized American art. Members of BMC engaged in creative thought exchange, radical experimentation, and even democratic facilities operations. Visionary educators and thinkers such as John Cage (and his chance operations), Robert Rauschenberg (and his Combine Paintings), Ruth Asawa (and her looped-wire sculptures), and Jacob Lawrence (teaching personal philosophy over technique) thrived in this interdisciplinary, tradition-shattering environment in North Carolina, helping pave the way for postmodernism.
