Figurative Abstraction

Adults

Learn a personal approach to figure painting with a grounding in canonical painters. First, focus on formalism (composition, color, and shape) with Matisse, Milton Avery, the Bay Area Figurative Artists, and contemporary painters such as Frank Auerbach. Then, explore expressionism with Picasso, de Kooning, Cecily Brown, and Elizabeth Neel. Learn to use these artists as foundations for your own interpretation. Some experience in drawing and/or painting is required.
