Illustrative Surface Design in Ceramics

Adults

Take your ceramic work beyond form and discover the endless possibilities of surface design. In this intermediate-level class, students will explore how drawing, carving, and layered decoration can transform both wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery into expressive works of art.

In this class, we’ll experiment with underglaze drawing & painting, sgraffito, mishima, water carving, newsprint transfers, wax resist, and other decorative processes. Students will learn how different surface treatments can be incorporated throughout the making process, from soft clay to leather hard and beyond, and how each stage offers unique creative opportunities.

This class encourages personal expression while building technical skills. Through guided demonstrations and individual exploration, students will develop a collection of surface design techniques that complement their own style and help them create ceramics that are as visually engaging as they are functional.

Tuition includes guaranteed access to 3 Ceramics Open Studio sessions per registered class. Ceramics Open Studio is an opportunity to practice skills outside class. A sign up sheet will be available when class starts.

Given the complexities of firing, we cannot guarantee student work will be fired in the order in which it was received. Students will be emailed each time the kiln has been fired and unloaded. Because of limited space we can only hold onto finished pieces for three (3) weeks and will discard any unclaimed pieces after the posted date.
