Personal Maps of the Imagination

Adults

Loosely inspired by the concept of maps, this course invites students to create nontraditional, personal maps rooted in their own experiences, memories, and imagined worlds. These “maps of the imagination” may be abstract, representational, or entirely non-objective, and can be created using any medium.

Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of approaches, such as a poetry map, retirement map, topography-of-a-face map, walking map (from point A to point B), music map, relationship or marriage map, dream map, landscape map, mood map, mythological map, popular culture map, career map, petroglyph-inspired map, fictional map, map of influences, or even a dating map.

Throughout the course, students will draw inspiration from contemporary artists including Derek Lerner, Patrice Kworkin, Etienne Gelinas, Matthew Ritchie, and Julie Mehretu, while developing their own unique visual language and conceptual approach to mapping.
