A workshop that explores the calming and satisfying practice of creating symmetry through pinching. Based on the curriculum described in the 70’s classic, Finding Your Way with Clay, by dancer and American potter, Paulus Berensohn, students will create pinched clay bowls through structured, tactile exercises that are relaxing and fun. Connect to this ancient art form and explore the material properties of stoneware clays to learn techniques for how your hands can shape and form. This is experience based; work will not be fired!
Experience the art of throwing clay that is as ritualistic as your morning cup of coffee. Through breathing, setting intention, and experiencing the mud’s characteristics, find yourself as centered as your mound of clay. By immersing oneself in the tactilely responsive material, practice quieting your mind and focusing on how your body influences what lies at your fingertips.
Explore drawing as a tool for connecting to your intuition. Draw outside the framework of your conscious mind. Practice how to draw without thinking, make art without an end in mind, and tap back into the style that is uniquely and purely yours. Meditative Drawing is like yoga on paper. The artwork is not a drawing or a pose. The artwork is you.
Watercolors, like life, can be unpredictable and impossible to control. This class will attempt to nudge us towards embracing the temperamental nature of things and maybe even transform this into something beautiful. Students will gain confidence in basic watercolor techniques while learning how to co-create with the medium and drop into their creative flow.
