HOST: Celeste Presents contener

A Monthly Series Inspired By Celeste, Featuring Saakred

Visit the Jones Center during our extended evening hours on August 9 (Wed) and join us for the last contener event, a monthly performance series held within the HOST gallery space. Inspired by the sense of community created by our current HOST exhibition, Celeste, the event will feature multidisciplinary artist, Saakred.

Doors open at 6P, and the performance will begin at 6:30P. This event is FREE.

About Saakred

Person with long hair wears a cowboy hat and sunglasses, while covering their mouth with scarf.

Through performance, sound, and video, Saakred has been probing interests in both scholars and punk aficianados alike since their first public performance in 2012. Pushing in and out of post-colonial performativity, what began as an earnest attempt at self-healing, quickly grew into a conceptual stage for testing the limits of public vulnerability and sensorial experimentalism. Through dynamic and confrontational modalities, the SA native has been described as one of San Antonio’s "most original and intense performers" (San Antonio, Texas). Performing for the first time in three years, Saakred will present a collection of original compositions and songs spanning a decade of recordings through a minimalist interpretation of instrumentation and arrangement.

About contener

For the first exhibition in the HOST gallery space, located inside the Jones Center, Mexico City-based artist duo Celeste have installed a large textile painting and designed a long, curved bench with the intention of creating an intimate environment, or container, in which performances and other community events can take place.

In response to Celeste’s installation Mario Villanueva, The Contemporary Austin’s Experience and Engagement Manager, created contener as a monthly performance series. In the spirit of gathering to support other artists, contener will feature different musicians every second Wednesday of the month while Celeste’s work is on view. These specially planned monthly events are set to take place inside the exhibition space, creating an intimate experience for participants.

While you’re here, explore the stunning exhibition Eamon Ore-Giron: Competing with Lightning / Rivalizando con el relámpago, also on view at the Jones Center. And be sure to head to the rooftop for an after-hours view of beautiful downtown Austin.
