Master Japanese filmmaker Kaneto Shindo transformed Japan's post-war nightmares into several of his thrilling and expressionistic masterpieces, this one set in feudal Japan.

Deep in the mist-swept bamboo wilderness, samurai troops returning from war are mysteriously killed. A valiant young man is dispatched by the warlord to uncover the murderers, but all is not what it appears in this forest in which ghosts are real and the desire for revenge is never satisfied without bloodshed.

Kuroneko, which translates to "black cat in a bamboo grove," is a marvel of atmospheric horror, where the spirits of two vengeful women ally with the ghosts of the forest, and the brave hunter finds himself trapped between the worlds of the living and the dead.
