In honor of pioneering land artist Nancy Holt’s birthday, gather at the location of her site-specific sculpture Time Span (1981) to observe in real time as sunlight pours through the sculpture to illuminate a plaque installed in the earth, commemorating both the artist’s time of birth and the completion of the artwork. The best time for viewing the sculpture is at 3P sharp.
Exemplary of Holt’s interests in time, astronomy, and the cosmos, Time Span was commissioned for this site by the then-named Laguna Gloria Art Museum and shows Holt’s interest in the relationship between human perception, the natural environment, and the passage of time.
We are pleased to offer the public a brief viewing window beyond 3P, our regular closing time, to observe the work. From The Contemporary Austin’s Visitor Engagement team, Matt Weed will be present to greet the public and answer questions about the work.
Event is included with the price of general admission.
