About New Cumbia

Inspired by the work of artist Eamon Ore-Giron (also known as DJ Lengua, his music alter-ego), whose exhibition Competing With Lightning / Rivalizando con el relámpago is currently on view at the Jones Center, The Contemporary Austin will be amplifying the sounds of various local DJs and musicians that play or perform cumbia, as well as related genres emerging from Latin America, over the course of five monthly New Cumbia Rooftop Session events, curated by Mario Villanueva (Experience and Engagement Manager).

As a DJ, musician, and producer, Ore-Giron has extensively explored the history of Latin American music and is considered one of the New Cumbia Movement’s pioneers. While living in San Francisco, Ore-Giron co-founded in 2003 the highly influential event series Club Unicornio with other artists and musicians, including long-time collaborator Julio César Morales, to highlight new and experimental approaches to Latinx music. Club Unicornio later turned into a record label based out of Oakland, CA, which pressed exclusively on vinyl and has released records from musicians like Chicano Batman and Roger Más. Born in Tucson, Arizona, and based in Los Angeles, Ore-Giron has also resided in different cities in Latin America, including Mexico City, Guadalajara, Huancayo, and Lima, all of which have influenced his unique perspective on cumbia music.

What is cumbia music? Cumbia is a style of Latin American music that originated in Colombia and is highly popular throughout the Americas. The music genre mixes a blend of African, Amerindian, and European styles and employs musical instruments such as drums, flutes, maracas, and accordions, depending on the region.
