Sound Ceremony

With Artist Guadalupe Maravilla

We are delighted to welcome artist Guadalupe Maravilla back to Austin for one final offering of a healing sound ceremony. As the sun sets over the city, we welcome you to join us in the lower meadow for a sound ceremony led by the artist and guest sound healers. For this immersive experience, Maravilla will activate the installation Mariposa Relámpago, a sculpture he has turned into a large-scale vibrational healing instrument.

Maravilla is a cancer survivor. His art practice is centered on healing. While undergoing cancer treatment, he was introduced to sound therapy, a healing practice that uses tonal vibrations produced by gongs to improve physical and psychological health. Maravilla is a trained sound healer who regularly holds workshops for undocumented immigrants, cancer patients, and those in need of vibrational healing.

Mariposa Relámpago is the artist’s largest sound-healing sculpture. At the sound bath, the artist and sound healers will play the gongs to activate the work and create an immersive soundscape, restoring calm and balance to those in attendance.

This program is open to the public and admission is free. Skip the line with advance registration, or register upon arrival (walk-ups are available upon capacity). The sound ceremony will last for approximately 45 minutes beginning at around 6:45p, with seating opening at 6p. Please take this duration of quiet attention needed into consideration when registering little ones or bringing furry friends to this experience. We highly recommend arriving early to ensure you have time to travel the distance from parking down to the lower meadow. Audiences are welcome to sit or lie down on the grassy meadow. Please bring your own yoga mat or blanket and a water bottle.

This program is presented in conjunction with the installation Mariposa Relámpago, on view through at Laguna Gloria November 3, 2024. Learn more about the project and the artist here.

Guadalupe Maravilla: Mariposa Relámpago is commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary
Art/Boston. Mariposa Relámpago will travel to venues across Texas through a partnership between
organizations including Ballroom Marfa, The Contemporary Austin, and the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston. The Contemporary Austin's presentation is organized by Alex Klein, Head Curator & Director of Curatorial Affairs.
