Free and open to the public!

Delve into science fiction novel Parable of the Sower, by award-winning American writer Octavia Butler.

Parable of the Sower (1993) is the winner of multiple awards, has been adapted into a graphic novel, and continues to inspire art and conversation about social justice. Set in the year 2024, the novel takes place in a dystopian version of the United States produced by climate change, wealth inequality, and corporate greed. The story is narrated by Lauren Oya Olamina, an African American teenager on a quest for freedom. Co-presented by Austin Public Library with discussion facilitated by librarians.

The Austin Public Library and The Contemporary Austin co-present a book club series, With Liberty and Justice for All, that draws on fiction, poetry and visual art to explore themes of racism, social justice, empathy, healing, and community. This month’s book club will take place in the outdoor amphitheater of Laguna Gloria alongside Wangechi Mutu’s Water Woman sculpture. Socially distanced seating provided, please wear a mask.
