Get Involved

Volu nteering a t The C on tempora ry Austin is a fun way to get involved on a day-to-day basis, volunteers assist the museum in achieving its goals in a number of key capacities:

Youth Education

Youth education volunteers assist museum staff and provide strong role models for teens participating in education programs.

Volunteers agree to assist with a specific, ongoing youth education program, and commit to at least half of the meetings for that program
Volunteers must be able to engage teen audiences
Previous experience working with teens preferred
Weekend and evening availability preferred
Volunteers must pass a background check

Special Events

Special events volunteers assist museum staff with exhibition openings, Museum Days, and other special events hosted by The Contemporary.

Volunteers agree to volunteer at events as needed
Volunteers must be friendly and be able to communicate and interact with a diverse audience
An interest in contemporary art and visual culture is preferred
Weekend and evening availability preferred

Visitor Services

Visitor services volunteers provide exceptional customer service by greeting visitors, answering questions, offering information, and providing directions to museumgoers.

Volunteers agree to two-hour shifts, every other week, and attend training sessions for each exhibition
Volunteers must possess strong customer service skills and be able to communicate and interact with a diverse audience
Preferred six months of prior experience volunteering with the museum

The Art School

Volunteers ages 13 and up are actively recruited for all classes at The Art School with particular emphasis on children's classes, for which the following three criteria are used when interviewing a prospective volunteer:

Enjoy working with children—experience is preferred, but not required
Enjoy art! Again, an arts background is a plus, but not necessary
Willingness to make a commitment to attend all classes, arriving 15 minutes early to help with setup and staying 15 minutes late to help with cleanup
