Carol Reed and Graham Greene’s psychologically rich portrait of post-WWII Vienna is a richly satisfying film starring Joseph Cotten as a pulp writer who investigates the death of his friend under mysterious circumstances. With Orson Welles as the man who ties it all together. Draw connections between guest programmer Huma Bhabha’s artwork and the expressionist film’s war-torn, crumbling city, where multiple cultures and languages intersect, and deception abounds.
Directed by Carol Reed, UK, 1949, DCP, 108 min.
